UNITY CUP
— COME ON TRINBAGO!
20 Years along since the inaugural rendition of this tournament, the Unity Cup has made its way back to the United Kingdom! The UK credits both Africa and the Caribbean for their cultural impact on many British communities, and this competition serves as tribute to these regions.
T&T and Jamaica were chosen as the Caribbean representatives this time around, which are generally two of the better footballing countries on this side, however neither of them were able to leave with their heads held high.
The Results
The Soca Warriors, in particular, had an especially unsavoury outing as they lost both matches they played, losing 3-2 to Jamaica in the semis and 4-0 (!) to Ghana in the third-place playoff. Contrarily, the Reggae Boyz, upon defeating Trinidad and Tobago in their first match, sought to snatch glory from Africa, taking the game against Nigeria all the way to a penalty shootout. Nigeria held strong, however, not missing a single penalty and booking several flights back to Jamaica for the Boyz in the process.
Though they are not returning home covered in gold, we should be nothing but proud of our boys as well as their Jamaican counterparts. Competitions like these show the influence of the Caribbean around the world, and how meaningful our heritage really is. This effect can also be seen in instances such as Notting Hill Carnival…another celebration of Caribbean culture that takes place annually in England.
Our music…food…traditions…and even how we speak are all recognized and praised globally.
