Sinners (2025), Ryan Coogler’s fifth feature aims to position the vampire as the misguided champion of the oppressed. Set in the 1930s in the Jim Crow era, twin brothers Stack and Smoke (played by Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown in Mississippi to open a juke joint for their fellow townspeople. But little do they know what the music – performed by cousin Sammy (newbie Miles Caton) – attracts.

Revamping Dracula in the 21st century

Not the doppelganger of Dracula; not the dapper interloper into London society as in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, nor the cold, flickering monster of F.W Murnau’s Nosferatu,Eggers’ Nosferatu – as the heir of Dracula and its unauthorized twin – diverges from this line with its treatment of its most important character: Ellen.
Vampires Are Back—From Nosferatu to Sinners,
But the Hunger Has Evolved
The culturally infectious sex symbols of the twilight and golden age CW TV era have resurrected into the zeitgeist – still into hickies and out for blood but with an appetite for more. From the shadowy plague of Nosferatu to the spiritual colonizers of Sinners (2025), the vampire has evolved from monster to metaphor, and now to a force of ideological conversion. Ryan Coogler’s take resurrects the myth with a purpose: in Sinners, vampires are not merely undead—they are unfulfilled, culturally starved beings who consume music, spirit, and identity in their quest for belonging. Where Nosferatu crept through silent shadows as a symbol of death and disease, Sinners presents vampirism as a virus of supremacy, masked as connection. The fangs may remain, but the feeding has changed. Vampires are back—and this time, they’re after your soul
